Bimini to Marsh Harbor

28 May 2022 | Marsh Harbor Abaco, Bahamas

After checking in through customs and immigrations in Bimini, day three of our journey was sweet. Viento Azul was dancing across the water. Freedom was in the air. The winds were holding from the east at 15. Since we were not in the deep of the ocean and the sea was fairly calm, we were moving at 8.5, which is decent sailing. We arrived Strangers Key with plenty of sunlight left in the day.

Our first explore after meeting the locals who came to say hi was to investigate the crashed plane we say on the chart. It was not too far off the beach, which was covered with mounds of ancient conch shells. Then we went for a snorkel to see what we could find. Mutton snappers were cruising in the turtle grass covering the bottom of the sea along with a couple of conch, my absolute favorite. While hunting the sea floor, I found we were not the only ones there. Wide-eyed I became, as a giant hammerhead came gliding in my path. I was so amazed by his size that I became a very fast swimmer and jumped in the dingy in record time! I’ve seen a lot of sharks in my time, but this one must have been 10 feet plus! I was truly amazed by his size.

Nightfall came with brilliant stars so bright in the clear sky. The intensity was mesmerizing, declaring the glory of God. Looking out upon the waters, glowing and giving much joy, was bioluminescence. This was so special to the Calello family because while they were in Puerto Rico, they made a list of things to do, which included a visit to Vieques Island where Mosquito Bay is famous for bioluminescence, but time did not permit visiting Mosquito Bay. God is gracious to hear our prayers and fulfill the desires of our hearts, even if our hearts desire bioluminescence.

Morning comes with the cranking clanging of the anchor chain at Captain Ted’s favorite time of day, sunrise. I am grateful to God for the gentleness of the sea, especially on this day. The wind is east, the direction we need to go. Sailing would be a long day of many tacks, so we opt to motor. As the day continues, I look out to the sea, and to my surprise, is a butterfly! We are now off of Little Abaco. While motoring into the wind, the day becomes absolutely beautiful. Fishing lines are out, landing a sea-to-the-table lunch of fresh cero mackerel. The sky is a puffy cloud day over the quiet turquoise waters with the most brilliant colors, changing in depth and hue. It’s a day spent with the sharing of dreams and divine experiences, a time to dream even more so. There is a sense of excitement for days to come where dreams will come alive.

Reaching our destination for the day, we anchor off of Guana Caye, one of my favorite snorkeling spots. On arrival, Captain Ted jumps in and immediately comes up, looking for his pole spear. Then he dives back down and comes up with a beautiful 10-pound hogfish. Three years come this August, Hurricane Dorian ravished this area of the Bahamas. I am happy to see the reef has survived and is full of soft corals, sea fans and brightly-colored reef fish. However, the coral structure base showed signs of taking a great beating from the storm, yet its strength still remains as a habitation for life to continue. Snorkeling was a first for Tabitha, and she is beyond words to be introduced to a majestic, compelling new world before her eyes.
