August 15 2008 Gabriella departs Hawaii
Souls aboard are Ted, Trevor, Janet and Todd. . Renee departed late morning for her flight to California. I , Gail am sitting in the Honolulu airport waiting on my 11p.m. flight to Portland Oregon. Driving away from the marina at noon today was painful having to say good by to Ted and Trevor for a possible three weeks out to sea. My whole life for the past 2 years is behind me sailing out into the vast blue sea. The wind has returned to Hawaii it had been a two day calm which was delightful but did not last long enough. I could not resist I called Ted as I hit exit 5 heading out to the North Shore and Gabriella was just heading out of the marina and I received my pep talk. I spent the day swimming and shopping in the small historic surfing village the ocean was flat and gentle the day was passing. Ted called it was late afternoon Gabriella was clearing the north end of the island soon to be out of cell phone coverage reporting that the winds were up and Gabriella was off to a good start with the wind on her beam and they had been having a surprisingly nice sail. With evening approaching I started driving across the island the sun was sparkling on the cane fields with the mountains in the background. Today is a Holiday for Hawaii as it became a state under Dole I believe so the area is bustling with families enjoying the day and filling the roads. I arrived the car return with plenty of time to haul my over sized 9 foot board bag into the shuttle to my struggle of checking in one bag with the airlines. Success I can relax .My phone is making strange noises. Trevor has given me a ring which introduces a call with a stentorian announcement stopping me dead in my tracks en route to Star-bucks. Last call for the night Gabriella's smooth sail turned into a blast of over 30 knots after rounding the point of the island. Two hours of beating and heading out into the deep blue Ted says considering it is not that bad the seas are not to bad, the moon is full, delicious tenderloin dinner has been served and cleaned up Gabriella is underway for her first night back to sea. I can imagine the moon sparkling over the water and all the stars filling the sky. It only takes a couple of days and a traffic jam or two and you are ready to go back to sea. I pray for God to continue watching over Gabriella and all aboard to guide and protect them with the moon at night followed by the rise of the sun at dawn. Trust in the one who has the power for the Lord said let there be light and there was light and was good and it is good.
