New to sailing

I am new to sailing....my friend and I will setting sail from Cancun to Guatemala in December or April of 2016.
Just have so many questions about everything!
Would anyone be willing to answer my many questions?
Would you be willing to share your experiences with:
Money....I don't want to keep large amounts of cash on boat but not sure of exchange or accessibility? Please share.....
Firearms.... Would not feel safe sailing without at least one weapon....thoughts?
Back up GPS....have a raytheon GPS system on boat but would like a back up. Ideas?
