When we got to this area about 4 days ago, Ian said to me that he was tired of all the driving. We have done about 7000 kms since we left BC on the 29th of September. Mostly we have been on the move and the stops have been short. So rather than rush through this area so that we have time to see Bryce and Zion Canyons, we decided to just stop here and leave the other canyons for the trip home in the spring. Having made that decision, we found a really nice campground overlooking lake Powell which is the 2nd largest man made lake in N. America. It is part of the Colorado River system and with the dams, it has created a very very large lake in amongst the canyons. The campground is on a sandy bluff with lots of dessert bush around. There are lots of hares, rabbits and chipmunks about. We also saw a coyote the other day. It's in Glen Canyon Park which is a very large park hundreds of miles long. There is a huge dam build here and size wise it's almost as big as the Hoover dam but generates less power.
Right now the annual Air Balloon Festival is happening. We got up this morning at 6:30 to see the 7am launch of the balloons. Turns out it was too windy for them to launch so it was a no go. This evening the main street in town is closed down and the balloons will be on the street inflated and lit up inside. Its called the Balloon Glow so we are heading into town to see that. We've also done a few short hikes around the area and may even go to the resort pool adjacent to the campground this afternoon if the wind dies down. Tomorrow morning we are going to start the last leg of our trip and head south making a pass by the Grand Canyon. We will be visiting our friends Bill and Linda in Sierra Vista and from there we will head to the boat which is only 3 hour drive from their place.
Just added another Photo Gallery called Monument Valley to Glen Canyon.
