Grand Canyon and Arizona

17 November 2014 | Guaymas, Mexico
Ellen
I was reminded by a friend in an email that my last blog was in Glen Canyon even though we are now in Mexico and have been for a week. So lets see if I can recall where I left off.
From Glen Canyon to Grand Canyon was only a few hours drive. We arrived mid day and were treated to a beautiful first sight of the canyon on the extreme south east edge. Mother earth is truly an amazing thing. Words (mine anyhow) fail to describe the beauty that we have seen and experienced. It's just one of those places you have to see for yourself but it was worth the drive. Although I do have to say I prefer landscape that I can get close to and personal with like the Arches in Arches National Park. You can easily hike up to the arches and touch them where as the Grand Canyon even if you hike down the canyon its expanse is so massive you can only see a portion at a time.
The two days we were there it got very cold as a cold front moved through central US. Temps during the day were barely above freezing. So we were keen to move on south fairly quickly. We spent a few days driving through Arizona and said our goodbyes to Pat and Les in a Casino parking lot where we had camped the night before. It was a sad goodby but we will see them again soon.
Ian and I headed to Sierra Vista in south Arizona to visit with good friends Bill and Linda whom we met while cruising in Mexico several years ago. They have a beautiful sprawling house that is in the southern Arizona style but I don't know what it's called. Great place. Other cruiser friends were also there so we had a few days of lots of fun and great dinner parties.
We left there on Sat. the 8th and drove the 1 hour to Nagoles, on the Mexican boarder where we crossed. We got the "Green Light" and were able to drive right on through without stopping. Arrived in Guaymas at our boat just as the sun had gone down. Here we are. Ian did a quick check on board and all looked good except for the inch of dust/mud on the deck and a lot of dust down below. All easily fixed with water the next morning.
So here we are living in the boat yard also referred to as 'dirt camp' because of the lack of pavement. Oh well it is not so bad. We are living in the van while we get some work done on the boat. We figure we will be out on the hard for about another month and then hopefully into the water before Christmas.
Our first week here was really HOT but the temps seem to be cooling down already. We had our first Norther wind event of the season last night and it cooled things down.
So that pretty much sums up where we are at. We did over 8 thousand Kilometers, 4 provinces; BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, 6 states; N. & S. Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. We visited 5 National Parks and various state parks. We saw lots and enjoyed the trip. Now its time to get back to work...
There is a new gallery called Grand Canyon.

Vessel Name: Kasasa
Vessel Make/Model: Endurance 35
Hailing Port: Vancouver, British Columbia
Crew: Ellen Gallant and Ian Shepherd
About: Ian was born in South Africa and grew up on the water. He has been sailing for many years including some offshore crewing on various yachts. Ellen was born on the Prairies and the first time she was on a sailboat she was terrified but seems to have conquered her fear - well mostly.
Extra: Our long term goal: Sail off into the sunset... In the meantime, we are continuing to work on our boat, and at our jobs in order to fund that goal. We have been planning this trip for many years, but in the last 4 years we have gotten more 'serious' about it. We plan on leaving in October of 2010.
