Blackwater Match 27 June 2009

The 2008 Match was marred by the wind dying and if the forcastis correct we will have very little wind this Saturday when we race again.

This superb picture was taken last year as Wyvenhoe sailed past Walton Pier by Nigel Pepper. She was sailed by Richard Titchener who last weekend sailed her to victory in the Champion Staysail Class of the annual Thames sailing barge Match sailed from Gravesend.

Wyvenhoe is a Thames sailing barge built in 1898. She is based at Maldon in Essex UK. Licensed to carry 12 passengers she can be sailed by a skipper and a mate. For racing a crew of 5 is allowed.

Wyvenhoe is a Thames sailing barge built in 1898. She is based at Maldon in Essex UK. Licensed to carry 12 passengers she can be sailed by a skipper and a mate. For racing a crew of 5 is allowed.

As a trading vessel she carried 170 tons of cargo. Converted to a motor ship in 1923 she traded until 1982 when she was re rigged.

Based in London from 1990 to 2004 she now operates from the old Essex port of Maldon and all over the Thames estuary.
