Friday's collision between the the yacht Tunis and the "South Australian Tall Ship" was reported in the local gossip sheet, The Mercury, yesterday, as a "David and Goliath" incident, owner Dennis Georgakis getting a mention along with previous owner and Wooden Boat Festival initiator Andy Gamlin.
Andy came on board the Tunis as we sat in the cockpit Sat'd'y arvo, cramped by the remains of the mast and coils of rigging. He agreed the idea of re-rigging the Huon pine 1946 Tassie built yacht as a gaff yawl was a good idea.
Dennis had a long conversation with Dewey, ex-shipwright of the One And All, about the rebuild of the mast, while the boat sat in the jostle of flag-flying wooden boats being wondered at, photographed by, thousands of gawkers.
Rowboats with choirs, sailing boats, a rebuilt, varnished, V-8 throated speedboat, a floating tin shed complete with beer bottles and country band, kids in dinghies and a vintage coal-fired steamboat zigzagged, water-walked and paddled - gliding, raking, sliding, tracking in the sunny, light breeze on a perfect day.
