What About The Boat?
20 March 2011
What About The Boat? You may have been wondering. Well, we have definitely made the transition to land now. I go out to the boat about once a week, and I'm going today, with Adrienne. Last time I went I discovered water in the head; although I had turned off all three through-hulls, I had not fully tightened the raw water intake valve, which leads (among other places) to the toilet. Amazingly, I had left the boat the time before with the seawater inlet to the toilet OPEN. This had never happened before, and if the inlet valve had been fully closed, it would not have mattered. Water had trickled down to the bilge, where it was pumped out every time it got as high as the float switch. There is a backup bilge pump, which was switched on, so all was well - although you don't want to see water inside your boat!
After being back home a couple of months I have yet to begin work on restoring the boat to pristine condition after her long voyage over two-and-a-half years. There is paint and varnish work awaiting, cleaning and polishing of stainless steel, lots of small jobs to put her in order. At least the bottom won't be getting fouled in these cold waters as it did in the tropics.
