The Precise Slant Of Morning Sunshine

20 April 2011
Photo: Putting the pump back into pumpkin ... look closely and you'll see the proud grower himself, up to his nipples in grass, standing in front of his child.

We are house-sitting for 12 days in a lovely house in the country. The garden is bursting with life after the record rains, the lovingly-tended vegetable garden is replete with tomatoes, corn, zucchini, cucumber, potatoes, snap peas, lettuce, beetroot, carrots, rhubarb, grapes, parsley, basil, coriander, thyme, sage, and well-spaced trees are buxom with cumquat, lemon, lime, apples and pears. Tuberous begonias, Japanese poppies, geraniums, daisies and little purply-blue flowers, plus green lawns and even a birdbath flirt with your eyes through the branches - and a pot with a tree-full of South American chilli peppers sits on the quiet veranda, stopping time.

In the morning, all you do is climb out of bed, crap, shower, make a cup of tea, and stoke the fire. Then carry a chair out to the veranda and slowly, slowly let the peace seep into your bones. In someone else's house you have no tracks, no habits, so there is nothing to do; nothing to do except watch life reinvent itself before your very eyes. Do YOU have very eyes? They are necessary if you are not to miss the tremendous beauty unfolding now.

Two giant pumpkins lie like sleeping dogs, yellow as.

The house was a police station. It was lifted off its foundations and carried by convicts to its pleasant, present location. Completely at a loss, stationless police were found wandering in the bush for weeks after.
