WE ARE HERE IN L.A.!!
Went to Long Beach yesterday, saw Adrienne's old stamping grounds, Junior high, Woodrow Wilson High School, the park her dad created, where she swam and biked as a kid, and walked around the beach, yacht club, saw a movie being made on the beach, and the trailers with stars on the doors, the trucks, marquees, actors, food on tables, you know, had lunch in a sushi joint with a Japanese beer, after talking to a boat stuff salesman with a healed lip and nothing to offer, visited Gracia Drury, 93, a very dear friend of A's, and Jeannie, a neighbour 2 or 3 doors up from her family home at 45 Laverne, Long Beach. very tender, happy moments for A - and me too. Relaxed, easy and slow. Saw another salesman who brightened up when he heard how much we intended to spend. Shopped at Ralph's, a huge very cheap supermarket, where a bottle of Jack Daniels costs $16. It's hot, and we drove with the windows down, in our PT Cruiser, It's really exciting driving in California, everything runs very smoothly if you follow the rules, and remember to drive on the right, What is strange is the friction between the samenesses and the differences, everything is the same as in Aus yet everything is different. You could be in Sydney (almost.) The other thing is since you don't know your way around, or the local customs, you are limited in your freedom, yet the funny thing is you are completely free. You just roll along - oh, and one more thing being disoriented as to time is a delicious experience, it's the upside of jetlag.
