Porto Santo Stefano

We had to leave Giannutri early the next morning as the wind direction changed and we would have been pushed onto the rocks. The weather was due to change. There was a Gale Force 7 with gusts forecast on the VHF radio, from the French Riviera and down across Corsica. It sounded like the Mistral. In the [...]

Isola di Giannutri

We have now reached the island of Giannutri which is one of the Tuscan islands. It is wild and exposed. The island forms a natural crescent shape, shallow enough to anchor close to the shore, otherwise it is too deep. There is a little harbour where the ferry lands. We anchored quite close to some rocks, [...]

Riva di Traiano

We motored round from Rome and the sea still had remnants of swell. Three and a half hours later, we reached the marina at Traiano. This is a large modern well protected marina with cafes, restaurants and chandleries.

Porto di Roma

At 8.30am, we slipped our lines at Nettuno and headed towards the port of Rome. It was warm, but the air was muggy with little wind. On the VHF radio, we heard a Force 7 to 8 gale warning for Corsica, broadcast in Italian, French and English. Simon had already seen on the forecast an increase in swell [...]

Nettuno

It was a calm day with a light wind, so we motorsailed from Ponza to the marina at Nettuno. We had been here last year and had to watch the depth at the marina entrance. In one patch the depth sounder recorded 2.7m, we draw 2.1m. On the approach to the marina, we prepared to tie up, alongside rather [...]

Isola di Ponza

After a brief walk around Ventotene, we had breakfast in a café and bought a few food items in a little grocery shop. It was calm at sea, and we saw an army helicopter overhead, that did a fly by and circled the boat twice.

At anchor off Portimao

01 July 2018
We left the anchorage at Baleeira bound for Portimao. This was a short sail along the coast and there was just enough wind to sail.

We entered the harbour and went up the river to view the fishing village, marina, main fishing port and also the ferry terminal. We think the ferry runs to Madeira or the Canary Islands.

We came back to the entrance and anchored off the beach. There were many other yachts at anchor from all nationalities, including the US.

It was our anniversary so we had a bottle of champagne and a BBQ. There is nothing like an evening BBQ off the back of the boat, watching the activity on the river.

That night, a small amount of swell worked its way into the anchorage and made it unpleasant. When there is no wind, a yacht will often lie across the direction of the swell and roll. We were up early the next day and went ashore for a walk and coffee along the cliffs. There were some great views looking back over the river towards Portimao.

The second night we were determined to defeat the swell. Simon set a kedge anchor from the back of the boat which kept the boat pointing into the swell. This worked perfectly and we had a good night's sleep, although the yachts around us were slightly confused in the morning when we were pointing in a different direction to everyone else!

We had now been at anchor for 5 nights including the time at Sines, Baleeira and Portimao, so we decided to go into the marina for a couple of nights to go shopping and restock the boat.

On Tuesday evening we got a water taxi from the marina across to a fishing village for a fish supper. Simon tried a slice off a grouper and Fiona had some prawns. We knew the prawns were going to be large when the waiter asked if Fiona could manage two!
