A ship is safe in harbour...but that's not what they are for

The Cerulean Big Atlantic Adventure is now over. We are moored back at our home port of Gosport in the UK, and our adventure is rapidly turning into just a memory.

Stormy Days

247nm down 582nm to go

..The thunderstorms have now passed on and I can get the computer and other gadgets out of the oven and plug the sat phone back in... We caugt the edge of the front blowing through, just getting the tailing edge now with winds still gusting up to 30kts, It was an ugly night so washboards in and watch keeping from the relative comfort of the deck saloon, just had to watch out for the odd flying vegetable/fruit jumping out of the fruit net and of course for other vessels.

Quite a bit of shipping to contend with four or five ships all at once, must have been a major shipping crossroads, fortunately they seemed to know we were here and we didn't need to alter course at all, i suspect our AIS transponder and active Echomax Radar reflector help, they all seemed to pass around us with at least 2nm clearance. We were able to keep track of them on AIS and Radar and see lights of the ones close by. I suspect visibility of less than 3nm. Not a sign of a ship anywhere at the moment.

..excuse me for a momment, its gusting 30kts again need to shorten sail...phew all done, now where was I?

The main sail blew out a seam the previous night, fortunately a short one near the top, I have dropped and stowed the sail, that will have to wait til we get to Bermuda. So we where just on staysail and a fraction of genoa, with the wheel lashed off and 'Old Harry' we managed a fair course to windward making a comfy 5-6kts heading due East with a South Easterly Force 5-6 gusting 7. didn't to go up and make any adjustments all night. Now that the storm is passing we are now heading NE to our waypoint just a 100nm south of Bermuda. With the wind now abaft the beam we are just on Genoa with about half it rolled away. Hopefully these gust will blow through soon and leave us with something a little more gentle.
