Spiky Corryvreckan

19 June 2011 | Jura to Puilladobhrain: 36nm travelled
Nichola / overcast
The forecast was for showers and variable winds but we wanted to head on north so slipped the mooring at midday to catch the north bound tide. The weather stayed dry but the winds were unreliable leaving us motor-sailing most of the way. Even with tide with us and a beam on F5 we were making hardly any way - we must get the hull line cleaned!

The seas were slight but as we approached the southern edge of Corryvrechan they picked up into sharp, spiky chops with areas of swirling smooth water, mini whirlpools and waves breaking against the hull sending spray flying over us. Keeping a course was quite difficult and looking at our track against the land we could see we were being pushed towards the gap between Jura and Scarba. We upped the engine revs and doing 8kts with the tide meant we were only in the rough water for about 20 minutes but that was enough.

Through the Sound of Luing we got up to 11.5 kts the tide scooting us along. But the water here was much flatter than earlier with strange swirls folding in on themselves and we didn't feel so anxious. Spat out the top we motored into the anchorage at the top of Seil Island. It was fairly busy and we squeezed our way into the edge.

Colin is currently scrubbing the hull - hopefully it'll make a big difference to our progress through the water.
