Coral Head Slalom

Each atoll has something to offer. This is a picture of our current anchorage in the southern region of Fakarava. The black spots you see are coral heads. Beyond is a tree-lined blue lagoon with the ocean in the background. Zen sailed from the northwestern pass of Makemo Atoll overnight, arriving at Fakarava around 6:00a. At 3 in the morning, during our shift change, we saw a couple of other boats on passage and haphazardly tried hailing our friends on s/y Carl Linne. "Hallow Tom, en ow might you be dis loo-veh-lee mornin'?" replies Gabby's uplifting Swiss lilt. What perfect timing. Zen was the shallow draft scout and maneuvered the pass first. Northwest is not the standard tradewind direction, but that's what we have for a couple of days, making the normal anchorage area too rough. Feeling semi-pro after running a slalom course in Makemo, we made virgin tracks and tucked behind a reef in an unchartered zone. Our buddies followed. Zen and Carl Linne are the only boats for as far as the eye can see. For our reunion feast, we are having a pizza party on Zen tonight. Jinny is bringing dessert...she's a gourmet chef...Zensters are drooling already and it's only noon. Word has it this pass offers some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Tuamotus. Close quarters with hundreds of sharks. We'll learn tomorrow! Each anchorage is getting better and better. Thank God we have digital photos and not 35mm film, I'd have run out long ago.
