What Survives!

The Twisted Trees are lone survivors out here. Do they ever rot, someday maybe. They are fascinating the way they get twisted up from the wind.

The Seclusion

We found some!!! Seclusion that is. So far my experience in the Canyonlands has been different than I expected. The vastness, the beauty, that's all been inline with what I thought but I was expecting to be off more in the wilderness, away from the people. Even though the park is pretty unknown in the [...]

This ten mile round trip hike was said to be over flat [...]

The Hoodoos

The majority of the Needles area of the park is covered in rock formations called the Hoodoos, An overview here shows these mushroom looking structures. The needles are condensed in one dense section but the Hoodoos sprawl out to cover the rest of the Needles section of the park.

The Eeeery Canal

13 September 2014 | Phoenix, New York

Aaaaahhh finally the mast came down after a few more delays. We are still learning to be go with the flow sailors, we did pretty good being patient. It was a strange experience though watching a 54 foot pole being lowered down onto the cradle without crushing everything under it. I forgot to inform the operator of Dougs nervousness about such things. I am not sure which one was going to have the heart attack first, the operator from Doug or Doug from the operator! But down it came and off we went through the first of a series of locks going through the Oswego Canal which joins the Erie Canal. There was a feeling of defenselessness with the mast down, no back up if the motor goes out and the boat looking so small next to the giant cruisers. The second day puttering down the way was rainy and cold and very eery feeling. Very little traffic this time of the year and towns looking desserted, probably everyone hibernating inside on this dreary day. We stopped for the night on the south side of lock 1 in the town of Phoenix where a very boater friendly canal wall is all set up with free electricity, pump out, internet, bathrooms, water and wonderful picnic area. A group of kids called the bridgeport brats come down to your boat offering services like grocery shopping, ice delivery, boat cleaning, garbage pick up and more. They also serve lemonade and coffee, tips are appreciated but services are free. This New York State canal system is the best $37.50 a person could ever spend. For 10 days we can go through all 31 locks, tie on any wall and enjoy the extra amenaties like this town offers. We like it!
