What Survives!

The Twisted Trees are lone survivors out here. Do they ever rot, someday maybe. They are fascinating the way they get twisted up from the wind.

The Seclusion

We found some!!! Seclusion that is. So far my experience in the Canyonlands has been different than I expected. The vastness, the beauty, that's all been inline with what I thought but I was expecting to be off more in the wilderness, away from the people. Even though the park is pretty unknown in the [...]

The Confluence

The Historic Point of destination today led us to the Confluence where the Green river from and the Colorado river from Colorado meet in the center of the Canyonlands and join to be the Colorado river which runs through the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This ten mile round trip hike was said to be over flat [...]

The Hoodoos

The majority of the Needles area of the park is covered in rock formations called the Hoodoos, An overview here shows these mushroom looking structures. The needles are condensed in one dense section but the Hoodoos sprawl out to cover the rest of the Needles section of the park.

The Fishing Village

23 September 2017 | Porto, Portugal

Very close to where we docked at the marina was a neighborhood of its own called the fishing village. Since arriving on the European coast we have been in nothing but fishing villages of old, towns where men still fish for a living but life is a little more in the 20th century. This village was like going back in time. The woman met at the central bath where they washed clothes together, hanging them out on tepee like poles to dry. They themselves looked like they were out of a movie, like, well, wives of fisherman, the hair, the dresses, the aprons, something distinguishable in this regard. The men brought their catch in, right to the little cafes scattered through out the village, to where it was displayed on ice and cooked over the coals right there on the street. The streets were made of stone, narrow and served as a patio, a sidewalk and a street all at the same time. Doors of course came right up to the street as is usual in old European cities but the difference here were the benches, flower pots and clothes drying racks that were right outside the front door on what was technically the street. People would take in the evening air right outside their door. Sometimes doors were open, we couldn't help ourselves from peeking inside. One room serving as a kitchen, dining room, living room and sometimes bedroom seemed to be the norm. The whole village was a small area, kept meticulously clean. Unlike the seafood in the Galacia area consisting of creatures in shells these fisherman caught primarily swimming type fish (is that a real category). There was no lack of Octopus and Squid though.
