What Survives!

The Twisted Trees are lone survivors out here. Do they ever rot, someday maybe. They are fascinating the way they get twisted up from the wind.

The Seclusion

We found some!!! Seclusion that is. So far my experience in the Canyonlands has been different than I expected. The vastness, the beauty, that's all been inline with what I thought but I was expecting to be off more in the wilderness, away from the people. Even though the park is pretty unknown in the [...]

The Confluence

The Hoodoos

The majority of the Needles area of the park is covered in rock formations called the Hoodoos, An overview here shows these mushroom looking structures. The needles are condensed in one dense section but the Hoodoos sprawl out to cover the rest of the Needles section of the park.

Unique Airports

17 January 2018 | Funchal, Madeira, Madeira Islands

Back tracking a few days, we started seeing signs of the unique things on this island when we got close enough sailing in on the boat to see the airport. Nestled right along the Eastern coast, there is one run way beginning on land and continuing over the water on a long manmade bridge held up by huge pillars. After navigating this precarious runway the planes have to immediately begin their ascent up and over the mountain ridge. This is an international airport and we watched many jets take off and land as we sailed in. Even more interesting though is the fact that the small island of Porto Santo also has an international airport for the purpose of being a back up for the main island. Frequently the winds are so strong that planes have to alter course over to the small island and passengers take a ferry over to the main island.
