What Survives!

The Twisted Trees are lone survivors out here. Do they ever rot, someday maybe. They are fascinating the way they get twisted up from the wind.

The Seclusion

We found some!!! Seclusion that is. So far my experience in the Canyonlands has been different than I expected. The vastness, the beauty, that's all been inline with what I thought but I was expecting to be off more in the wilderness, away from the people. Even though the park is pretty unknown in the [...]

The Confluence

The Historic Point of destination today led us to the Confluence where the Green river from and the Colorado river from Colorado meet in the center of the Canyonlands and join to be the Colorado river which runs through the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This ten mile round trip hike was said to be over flat [...]

The Hoodoos

The majority of the Needles area of the park is covered in rock formations called the Hoodoos, An overview here shows these mushroom looking structures. The needles are condensed in one dense section but the Hoodoos sprawl out to cover the rest of the Needles section of the park.

The Nightwatch

Small boat. Big ocean. Two people. Hundreds and hundreds of miles from any land. Or help. Only each other. But there is another... an infinite space of awe and wonder into which we are completely immersed;
Sun, sky, clouds; cumulus clouds, horsetail clouds, frontal clouds and squalls. And water. Lots and lots and lots of water.
Invisible wind that inspires us to sail while demanding seamanship and respect
Pods of dolphins that in the pure freedom of their boundless world come to play with the boat. Apparently just for the joy of it.
All ever-changing in endless motion. All revelation speaking to us about the Mystery. And about the very small people in the small boat on the big ocean.

On the night watch however there is no seeing most of this. The guiding light hides. Waves hiss and growl in the darkness all around. Big waves behind the small boat. Driven by the wind still invisible but pushing us on. Is there trust? Trust that a connection to the Spirit within and without remains? Yes - and comes true peace and deep connection to other living souls... family and friends both still alive and passed on. But all fully present. Whispering along with the Mystery. Everything belongs.

And then in the darkness infinite Creation reveals more...
Bioluminescence streaming from the rudder underwater well off into the dark abyss. Meeting stars that reach down to the horizon thats out there somewhere. Or at least it was at last light. It's all one now all around as if in outer space here on Planet Water.
Meteors streak across the sky burning up before imploding on our world
Epic Richard Parker/Life of Pi like schools of flying fish heard exploding out of the water as the small boat streaks into their world. One impales me between my back shoulder blades then flops around on deck before falling back into the water - startled anyone?!
Water below making bioluminescent "stars", sky above holding stars, meteors that burn up, fish that fly, wind to sail by. Creation is truly wild at heart.

Suddenly in the darkness there's deep breathing/exhaling sputtering water beside the boat - as a snorkeler clearing their breathing pipe. Dolphins? Whales? How big? No can see - only hear. Not alone. There's that Trust thing again.

1000 miles to go. Two small people across one big ocean intimately traveling through awe and wonder with the Mystery. it's more than enough. Reverent Relationship. On any watch but especially the night watch.
