Queen of the Sea

21 April 2019 | English Harbour, Antigua, West Indies

This unknown (to us anyway) beauty appeared to be the self-proclaimed Queen of the Sea for the Classic Yacht Parade of Ships.

As the lead in the Antigua Classics Parade of ships, Columbia (141" long), hailing from Panama City, FL USA passes us by as we watched from an Italian restaurant in English Harbour.

Antigua Yacht Club (AYC)

After watching the classic yachts race from on high, we went down into English Harbour to the AYC to have lunch and to walk the docks to see these monster ships close up.

Here is one of the medium sized classic participants - the 103' staysail schooner EROS built in 1939.

See more photos under the gallery section which will be under construction for a few days.

Here is the tall ship Rhea and tall ship Chronos, both 156’ long and both with wishbone sails going neck and neck.

We had a great view of the racing from high up above English Harbour on Shirley Heights.

TwoLoose on the hard - again!

18 April 2019 | Jolly Harbor Marina Antigua, West Indies

It was a long day, the Thursday before Easter and we were glad to have it behind us.

Up around 0500, onto the boat in her berth for last minute preps, off to the marina office to pay our bill and finally the transit to the fuel pier where we topped off the tank.

Although we were scheduled for a 1330 pull, the travel lift had earlier ruptured a hydraulic hose, so we were delayed (in the very hot sun) in the lift process until about 1500.

Afterwards we returned to the villa we’d rented and crashed – sleeping almost non-stop for 10 hours!

Taking a break from our work schedule to enjoy probably our last dinner at Castaways for this season anyway. Genie & John of Island Time joined us.

TwoLoose's Photos - 2018 Christmas on Isla Mujeres, MX

2018 Christmas on Isla Mujeres, MX: A snowman greets us at the ferry - ready for the Holidays!
Island of Women: We arrived in Cancun on 20 Dec where Cindi met us and got us onto the ferry for the 20 min transit to Isla Mujeres – an idyllic little island where she and her family have lived for about 20 years! “Isla Mujeres (Spanish for "Women Island") is an island in the Gulf of Mexico, about 8 mi off the Yucatán Peninsula coast. The island is some 4 mi long and 2,000 ft wide. In Pre-Columbian times the island was sacred to the Maya goddess of childbirth and medicine, Ixchel.
Dogs playing: We were greeted in the cheerfully decorated house by these two characters: Taz (Tasmanian Devil) the newest member of the household and a male puppy trying to get the ball away from the matriarch of the group a golden retriever named Deesa.
Amaya decorates a gingerbread house for the season.: As Grandpa Pete looks on, Amaya decorates a gingerbread house to add to the house’s already festive Christmas décor. Amaya (18) was born in the local Mexican Navy Hospital on Isla Mujeres – a rare event indeed and was given the middle name of Ixchel, making her a true Island Girl!
Two of Peter’s Beautiful Girls: It is striking just how similar they look in person. One day Amaya came to our hotel to pick us up in the family car but we thought it was Cindi until she got closer to us! Cindi, a graduate of Annette’s alma mater’s arch rival – UVA, has made quite a name for herself “in social marketing, communications and public-private partnerships. She has led country-level work focuses on worker health and employer-based initiatives, in Guatemala, India, Uganda, Tanzania, and Bangladesh.” She flies all over the world working to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate than she. Needless to say we are VERY proud of her – even if she IS a UVA Cavalier! 😊
Andres – the handsome son.: He has recently graduated from University of Tampa, FL with a degree in International Business. He’s now taking some additional, marketing specific classes in Cancun as he shops for a job.
Happy Grandpa Pete: Peter is so very glad to be with his daughter and her family – he missed them
Getting into the Christmas spirit!: Peter is SO happy to be with Cindi and her family he actually enjoys dressing up for the photo!
Mission Complete!: With her brother Andres looking on Amaya finishes the gingerbread house – complete with icicles!
Ticket to Ride!: For his part, Andres taught us how to play this game of strategy (Ticket to Ride) involving buying the pieces (tickets) to connect you from one city to another without being blocked by another player – not easy!
Brother and Sister Delfin: While Amaya was born on island, Andres was born 4 years before her in the suburbs of Washington DC on the Fourth of July! They are both bi-lingual, sharp as tacks and growing into good looking adults – inside and out!
Proud Papa Arturo: Arturo has owned and operated his own scuba diving company (Delfin Diving) for as long as we’ve known him. He is also a dedicated father – getting his children up and to the ferry landing EARLY each morning for so many many years so that they could attend 12 years at the International School in Cancun.
Lookout!: Felix, one of two cats in the household, was rudely awakened from her nap and comes to see who done it!
Lounging Around the Pool: Grandpa and granddaughter relax around the pool at the place we stayed while on island – Worldmark Time Share.
Sleeping Beauty: After a mani/pedi Amaya snoozes in prep for an evening with her boyfriend.
Amaya and boyfriend Ramon: This relationship is still in it’s infancy but they seem to get along as good friends. Ramon teaches Salsa and other Latin dances and appears to be pretty good at it if his demo with Amaya in the living room was any indication!
Christmas Eve Dancing Demo: In Mexico, the focus of Christmas family gatherings is on Christmas Eve for THE big meal as opposed to Christmas morning for gift exchange. Ramon joined us for the Christmas meal and then showed us how the Salsa is done!
Grandpa has KP!: Cindi takes her father up on his offer to assist with the Christmas eve dinner by letting him peel the potatoes! The Christmas turkey and all the fixing which she prepared were delicious!
Relaxing breakfast at the pool: The place we stayed was relaxing for the most part. Because of the season, there was a lot of celebrating in the evening – disturbing our efforts to go to sleep at our usual old people time! As you can see, the party goers were all tired out in time for us to enjoy coffee & eggs poolside in the quiet morning!
Our ride to and from Cancun: We take this ferry to go to/from the mainland for many reasons – the airport, shopping at Wal-Mart & Home Depot, watch a first run movie in a very nice movie theater and to watch Amaya ride her jumper – Italiana. PLEASE SEE THE SUB-ALBUM, “AMAYA & ITALIANA”.
Happy New Year!: All too soon it was time to say goodbye to Cindi and her family. We hope it’s not so long before we see them again! Feliz 2019! to one and all!

Peter's granddaughter, Amaya, is an accomplished equestrian who owns her own jumper named Italiana. She is stabled in Cancun which means each day that she wants to ride her, she must drive to the ferry landing on Isla Mujeres, take the 20 minute ferry to Cancun, drive about another 20 minutes (crazy traffic dependent) to the stables for her work-out. Fortunately, one of her parents usually accompanies her to/from home to ease the logistics a bit but it is still an exhausting evolution! We admire her persistence and passion for the humane treatment of animals. Ergo her interest in becoming a veterinarian!
