Queen of the Sea

This unknown (to us anyway) beauty appeared to be the self-proclaimed Queen of the Sea for the Classic Yacht Parade of Ships.

As the lead in the Antigua Classics Parade of ships, Columbia (141" long), hailing from Panama City, FL USA passes us by as we watched from an Italian restaurant in English Harbour.

Antigua Yacht Club (AYC)

After watching the classic yachts race from on high, we went down into English Harbour to the AYC to have lunch and to walk the docks to see these monster ships close up.

Here is one of the medium sized classic participants - the 103' staysail schooner EROS built in 1939.

See more photos under the gallery section which will be under construction for a few days.

Here is the tall ship Rhea and tall ship Chronos, both 156’ long and both with wishbone sails going neck and neck.

We had a great view of the racing from high up above English Harbour on Shirley Heights.

TwoLoose on the hard - again!

18 April 2019 | Jolly Harbor Marina Antigua, West Indies
Annette Brown
It was a long day, the Thursday before Easter and we were glad to have it behind us.

Up around 0500, onto the boat in her berth for last minute preps, off to the marina office to pay our bill and finally the transit to the fuel pier where we topped off the tank.

Although we were scheduled for a 1330 pull, the travel lift had earlier ruptured a hydraulic hose, so we were delayed (in the very hot sun) in the lift process until about 1500.

Afterwards we returned to the villa we’d rented and crashed – sleeping almost non-stop for 10 hours!

Taking a break from our work schedule to enjoy probably our last dinner at Castaways for this season anyway. Genie & John of Island Time joined us.

Our early morning arrival revealed a quiet sleepy town tucked up in the low hills overlooking a smallish, narrow almost intimate harbor with quite deep water.
This fisherman arrived at the same time in the AM as we did but we reckon he was a lot more tired than we were! Note how he
The shipbuilding and sponge industries were substantial on the island and, while at their peak near the end of the 19th century, the population reached 22,500. Symi
Go here on the south side of the harbor FIRST!
The office on the second floor of this waterfront building (on the south/left side of the harbor as you enter) with the Greek Flag flying from its balcony goes by several names: Port Police, Port Authority, Hellenic (Greek) Coast Guard & perhaps other names. Suffice it to say; it is where one goes to have one’s Greek Transit Log stamped on arrival/departure Symi… unless one is checking out of Greece all together when they stamp it & then keep the transit log. Next one walks around the harbor to the Hellenic Police on the north side to the second floor of the white building with blue shutters behind the clock tower. They will stamp your passports for departing Greece.
Kinda nice to see a boat painted "haze gray" for underway!

It was sad to see SY Summertime so soon after our arrival but they had a commitment at a nearby anchorage.
Fleming was surprised to discover that the reason it was so difficult to bring up his own anchor was that another anchor had gotten attached to it!
As the day progressed most the sailboats departed – replaced by several HUGE ferries or cabin cruisers. We were amazed we all fit in so well to such a small harbor! The town’s clock tower was built circa 1880 & the Hellenic Police are on the 2nd floor of the white building with blue shutters behind the tower. This is the office to which you go AFTER going to the Port Authority for passport control.
Peter goes to take a look at just one of the many ferries that pulled in that day.
This was the first collection of ducks we
This is a view of Symi Harbor from the west looking east. Little is known of the island until the 14th century, but archaeological evidence indicates it was continuously inhabited, and ruins of citadels suggest it was an important location. It was first part of the Roman Empire and then the Byzantine Empire, until its conquest by the Knights of St. John in 1373.
There are LOTS of cats around the harbor - this little guy looks like he
This Orthodox Church looks down on the town on Symi and the harbor. The town of Symi has thirteen major churches and dozens of chapels, some dating back to the Byzantine era.
